Leadership Skills And Emotional Intelligence

In Bhagwad Gita, it has been said: Remain even-minded at all times even amidst profit or loss, pleasure or pain, sickness or health, victory or defeat, praise or criticism.

These are different names of the result of your action. So, there is no need to become emotional on a result whether it is favorable or unfavorable. Use your rationality to identify the root cause of favorable or unfavorable result.

In the case of favorable result, push this cause even with much greater force. In the case of unfavorable result, try to remove the root cause itself. To the extent you become emotional, your excellence is reduced to that extent.

Take the following example of Emotional Intelligence and Leadership: A company was engaged in manufacturing synthetic yarns for knitting. The quality of these yarns depended very much on the proportion of different types of fibers blended. One day, two management consultants visited the company on its invitation. Both of them were discussing the problems of the company with its chairman.

While they were discussing with the chairman, a person entered the room with his angry face and that too without knocking the door and seeking the permission of the chairman. Straightway, he told the chairman, “Mr. Chairman, The guys to whom you have appointed as technical trainees are worthless. They do not understand anything which I say. In fact, they do not want to understand anything.” Without waiting for the reaction of the chairman, he left the room. Both the consultants were taken by surprise on this event and one of them asked the chairman, “Who is he and how do you manage such a person?” The chairman said little smiling,” He is our technical director.

He is quite moody but quite knowledgeable person in his field. When he is in good mood, he produces excellent ideas for blending different types of fibers.” Later n the consultants enquired from some of the employees of the company about the behavior of the technical director. Every employee agreed with the technical competence of the technical director but no one was appreciative of his mood. They were of the view, “ the technical director can say anything to anyone. He does not even spare the chairman.”

Look at how his mood problem made an excellent technical director unworthy on behavioral in front in his own company. Emotional intelligence enables you to overcome this type of problem and enhances your performance. In particular, emotional intelligence helps you in the following ways:
