When you have clear goals, you are certain about what you want to achieve which is motivating for you. In the absence of these goals, for what will you be motivated? Motivation works like this: you have a goal and take an action to achieve this; when this is achieved, you feel satisfied and you feel motivated to take further course of action either of the same type or of a different type but goal directed one. If you do not achieve the goal by an action, it becomes dissatisfying to you. In order to overcome this dissatisfaction, you feel motivated to take an action with much greater force. In either case, existence of a goal is a pre-condition.

Why do not some people set goals?

There was a joke in the internet dot com:
Where am I?
A man was flying in the sky with the help of parachute. At a point of time, he felt that he was not aware where he exactly was. He saw a man on the ground and asked him loudly, “Where am I at this moment?” the man on the ground replied, “You are at 30 degree north and 75 degree west at this moment.” Back came the question from the man who was flying in the sky, “Are you a scientist?” The man on the ground replied, “Yes, but how did you know that?” the man in the sky told, “Because your answer is very specific, but still I could not know where I am.” The man on the ground asked, “Are you a manager?” The man in the sky replied, “Yes, but how  did you know that?” The man on the ground told, “Because they are the persons who do not know where they are and why they are there.”
Well this is just a joke that does not mean to offend anyone. (I know very well that some managers define their goals very precisely.) but the question is: do many people not do the same thing as the man on the ground remarked?  The answer is: there are plenty of such people who do not know where they are and why they are there. With the result, either they do not make effort or even if they make efforts, these are half-hearted and directionless. With such kind of efforts, they should not expect to achieve anything meaningful. There are some reasons why people do not set goals for themselves. Some of the major reasons are as follows:

  1. Lack of ambition: generally, people who have ambition to achieve something meaningful, set goals for themselves as well-defined goals are absolutely necessary for achieving something meaningful. Though who d not have such an ambition do not set goals. Ambition is the state of strong desire for achieving any thing. People who lack this ambition have limited thinking and tend to develop that they can do without having well-defined goals.
  1. Lack of confidence in themselves. People who have lack of confidence in themselves do not set goals as they are not internally motivated.

 

  1. Fear of failure. When people set goals, they measure their performance in the light of these goals. When the performance is not in the accordance with the goals, they develop a feeling of failure. Without goals they can save themselves from developing such a fear.
  1. Lack of realization of importance of goals. Many people do not realize the importance of goals in directing and motivating their actions. They have feeing that goals are required for business and other type of organizations. Therefore, they treat goal-setting a futile and time consuming process.

 

  1. Lack of knowledge about goal setting. Meaningful goal setting is a step-by-step process which requires visualization and analysis of the situation in which goal achievement actions are taken. People who do not have adequate knowledge about these fail to set goals.
  1.  Procrastination. Procrastination is the habit of putting today’s work on tomorrow which never comes. Those people ho have the approach of procrastination never find time to set goal for themselves.

       If you analyze the reasons why people do not set goals, you will find that most of the reasons are related to people’s unwillingness to set goals rather than the time or mechanism involved in goal-setting. You will also observe that these people do not believe in excellence. By analyzing these reasons of lack of goal-setting, you can safeguard yourself against these.
