Wright Brothers imagined flying in sky like birds in a machine. Initially people laughed at it. But Wright Brothers continued to convert their imagination into reality and invented airplane. This initial invention has even lead the people to go to another planet or to send their satellites on other planets.
In fact, most of the scientific inventions emerge from fantastic ideas which themselves are generated by imagination.
Pablo Picasso has said: Everything you can imagine is real. Imagination helps you generating lot of new ideas.
Einstein has said: Logic will take you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.
Poets are very creative. That is why it has been said ‘ where the rays of sun do not find access, a poet reaches there with his imagination.’
Sigmund Freud has commented:
Everywhere I go, I find that a poet has already reached there.
Novelists’ characters reached other planets much before the scientists thoughts of doing that. In any field of human activity, all great persons have been individuals of imagination. Whether it is literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, or any other activity, you will find the power of imagination.
Take the example of Kalidas, the great Sanskrit poet, who has created outstanding literature in Sanskrit: Come Fool, Come. Kalidas was a state poet in the state king Bhoj. One day, King Bhoj entered the apartment of his queen where she was in conversation with her lady friend. Seeing Bhoj in her apartment, the queen took a front and told, “Come fool, come.” The king was perplexed with this strange welcome but kept silent and went away from the apartment. Next day, the king went to his court and began to address all ministers and courtiers who came there turn by turn by saying, “Come fool, come.” Everyone was surprised by this kind of welcome but did not say anything. When Kalidas entered the court, the king welcomed him by saying, “ Come fool, come.”
Kalidas imagined that there was something wrong with the king and he told the king in reply to such a welcome, “Oh king! I do not eat while going. I do not laugh while talking. I do not feel proud what I have done. I do not interfere when two persons are conversing. Hence, what is the reason that you have called me fool?” The king who was doubtful as to why his queen called him fool when he entered her apartment where she was conversing with her friend, realized that it was uncivic on his part to intrude upon the privacy of two women. How imaginative the answer of Kalidas was! Imagination differs from creativity in the sense that imagination is a kind of general thought – provoking action while creativity is oriented to a specific problem or a set of problems of a similar nature.
Through your imaginary power, you can bring many more ideas, and it is quite possible that some of these ideas fit with your work. You can increase your imaginary power by practicing two things:Keep your mind open.
Continuous thinking.Keep Your mind open.Your mind is like a parachute. It works well when it is open; it does not work when it is closed. Therefore, keep your mind open. If you keep your mind open, you will learn a lot; you will feel that a world exists beyond which you are able to see at present.
Marcel Proust has said:
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but having new eyes. When you keep your mind open, you can have these new eyes through which you can see how things are happening, why they are happening in a particular way.
Such a kind of seeing will enable you to imagine about various environmental phenomenon. You may get lot of ideas and some of these ideas may be relevant to your work, if not at present, may be in future. Look beyond your present too. Those who keep their mind closed under the assumption that what they are doing is the best, what they are thinking is the best, or what they are knowing is the best, cannot cross the circle which they have formed for themselves. With the result they do not think beyond this circle; tend to be less receptive of new ideas or even resistant to such ideas.Continuous Thinking. While your open mind will make you receptive for new ideas, your continuous thinking will enable you to evaluate these ideas in right perspective and consequently, generate more ideas.
George Bernard Shaw has said: Few people think two or three times a year. I have made an international reputation for myself by thinking once or twice a week.Such is the power of thinking. If you think continuously, it will lead you to become imaginative and creative and you can synthesize scattered ideas into concrete ideas. Synthesis is the process of combining different elements, but interrelated , to constitute a system or model. Often, you may have lot of ideas, some related, some unrelated. If you put the related ideas together, you will develop a model which can be used to solve a problem or a set of problems. This process is generated through continuous thinking.
