Role of creativity:
Edward de Bono has commented;
Without creativity there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns.
If we follow the same patterns what we have followed in the past, we will remain there from where we have started. It implies that there is no progress.
There is a famous psychological rule:
If you always do what you have already done, you will always get what you have always got.
In order to do things excellently, you have to break this impasse. If you collect the examples of excellent performers related to your field, you will find that all these performers have tried something different which low performers could not do.
Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.
Creativity brings such differences. One skill that significantly differentiates excellent performers from low performers is creativity. Creativity is required because of the operation of law of equifinality. This law is applicable to any type of work – business, sports and games, entertainment, education, politics, or name any work. Law of equifinality suggests that final outcome can be achieved by a variety of alternatives may be more effective, some less.
Some alternatives may be less time consuming, some more. Some alternative may require less energy, some more. And so on. The alternative that is socially relevant and requires less time and energy is the most desirable as it saves time and energy which can be used in another work. Most of the technological inventions aim at reducing the amount of time and energy in doing a work. These inventions are the result of creativity. However, the scope of creativity is not limited to only technological innovations but its scope extends to all type of innovations. In fact, creativity is required to solve any type of problem in an innovative way. Anna Freud has said: Creative minds have always been known to survive any kind of training.
