ATTITUDE CHANGE II |
Every aspect of life and environment n which we live has two aspects – positive and negative. A positive aspect affects us favorably while a negative aspect affect us unfavorably. This is true for attitude formation too. If you look for positive, you will find numerous such things and your attitudes will turn to be positive. If you look for negative, you will find numerous such things and your attitudes will turn to be negative. In order to develop positive attitudes, you must look for positive. This approach does not apply to persons only but extends to objects, information, ideas, and other elements too.

Look for Gold and Not Dirt So, try to look for the gold (positive) and not the dirt (negative) that you have to move for finding gold. If you try to find out positive things from your environment, there are plenty of such things.
The only thing that you have to do is to develop an attitude that positive things exist in the environment and you can find such things. In order to identify positive elements in your environment, you can apply social facilitation effect principle. This effect refers to the tendency for performance to improve or decline in response to the presence of others. If your performance goes up in response to the presence of a particular person, he is positive to you. If your performance goes down in response to the presence of a particular person, he is negative to you. What is true for the presence of a person is true for the presence of any element of the environment. You can apply the same principle for these elements too. Though you may interact with numerous elements of environment and these may affect your attitudes, your attitudes are affected positively by two major elements – positive people and positive literature. Therefore, your focus must be to identify these two positive elements.
