TOPIC-BASED GROUP DISCUSSION : In topic-based group discussion, topics may be from any field unless the organizations prescribe some specific fields though this practice is not very common. For preparing topic-based group discussion, you may classify topics into five broad categories: economic, political, socio-culture, technological and international. Topics from each of these fields may be either related to their functioning, for example, functioning of public sector in India, or current development, for example, growth story of Indian economy.

A notable feature of selecting topics for group discussion by the organizations is that the topics are not decided much in advance of the group discussion but are decided very close to it. In many cases, these topics are decided just before the commencement of the group discussion. Therefore, if you keep watch on the latest developments in the fields, there is very high chance that you get a topic of your choice. For identifying topics based on latest developments, you can read the questions put by most of the prominent daily newspaper in the form of opinion polls. For preparing materials on different topics, take the help of books and various magazines dealing with career development. While preparing materials for topics, take a topic as a system, identify its components and their interrelationships. After going through this process, think about the positive and negative features of the system. It may be mentioned that no system howsoever good it may has only positive features. Similarly, no system howsoever bad it may has only negative features. If you prepare with positive and negative features of a topic, you will be in better position to defend your view. For example, suppose you have been given the topic: is reservation of any type in India bad? You may take a stand that it is bad and for that purpose, you find out the relevant logic for this and put your views. It is quite possible that other members of the group do not agree with this and they put forward their views. If you have prepared about likely positive consequences of reservation, you can defend your views by giving suitable replies to the views which are contradictory to your views. If you prepare on this pattern, you can take a stand on any topic and can justify your stand too
