COMMUNICATION SKILLS : Communication skills are in the form of one’s ability to express his views and listen to others’ views effectively. In group discussion, your communication should be slightly different from interpersonal communication involving only two persons. Communication during group discussion process is marked by the following characteristics:

A. Group members are strangers to each other. It is possible that some of them may be introduced to each other just before the start of group discussion or earlier but the phenomenon of being strangers exists during group discussion process. Therefore, it is essential that you communicate in a formal way. This must be reflected in your words, tone, and body language. For example, if you are referring anyone by his/her name, use prefix Mr. or Miss, as the case may be before the name. Further, avoid using those words which are used for referring close friends. B. Since candidates might be from different educational backgrounds, it is necessary that you communicate in a simple and lucid manner so that it is understandable to the group as a whole. Avoid using jargons of the field of your speciality. Using too many jargons may appear to be impressive from your point of view but it is taken adversely by the evaluators. If you are required to use any jargon because of lack of substitute words or any other reason, offer its explanation briefly in simple words. However this should not be done repeatedly. If the candidates are from the same educational background, you can use more commonly used jargons as these can be understood by them easily. C. Address the group as a whole and not to any individual. For example, if someone has talked about any aspect with which you do not agree, say that you do not agree with what Mr…. (if you know his name) has said rather than saying that I do not agree with what you have said. Thereafter, you may mention the reason for your disagreement. D. As far as possible, use persuasive communication. Persuasive communication aims at persuading others to see a problem from multiple perspectives without hurting the sentiment of any member. For this purpose, before putting your view, show appreciation of others’ views and explain the perspective with which you are raising a view. E. Do not interrupt any person while he is talking. Interruption is against the etiquette. However, if you feel that the person is taking disproportionate time, ask him gently to finish his talk as the time is running out. F. Listen attentively if someone is talking. This must be reflected by your body language too. During group discussion, listening attentively carries the same weight as talking.
