Gemologists

Gemologists are the people who have knowledge regarding gems. Gems are semi precious or precious stones. They have physical properties and aesthetic value also. The colored stones are cut and polished to set them in gold and silver jewellery. Gemology is a science and it is a branch of mineralogy. The gemologists study this branch of science to be more equipped and get perfection in this field.

There are short term and long term courses in gemology. As gemologists are to work and experiment with precious and expensive material therefore they should have meticulous and precise approach. Some jewelers also get formal training to identify and evaluate gems.

There are numbers of gem stones. Gemologists specialize in different types of gems. The laboratory gemologists are expert in identification of origin. There are gemologists who have specialized in diamonds only. With the rise in demand of diamond jewellery the demand of gemologists have also grown. As the synthetic gems are also being manufactured therefore gemologists are all the more important to differentiate the synthetic and natural gems.

They can judge the quality of gems by their physical properties. The stone is identified by its color refractive index, optical character, specific gravity and examination of internal characteristics under magnification. Gemologists value gems on the basis of their cut, polish, atomic structure and its origin. Gemologists are expert in grading, sorting and setting of gems in various metals.

Gemologists work as diamond and gem exporter, dealer, grader and assorters. They can also become owner of the jewellery shop, broker, distributor, and gem consultant and gem appraiser.

Gem shaping, inlay work and engraving are other options for the gemologists. Some gemologists also get into the trading of jyotish gem stones. As jyotish gem stones should remain natural and not colored or chemically enhanced by man. Therefore such gemologists should be honest enough in supplying right gem stones to the right people for the right purpose.
