Fashion merchandisers are very important part of the fashion industry. Rather we can say that they are the back bone of this industry. The responsibility of production process mainly lies on their shoulders. So we can say that a success of a garment production house depends on the management abilities of the fashion merchandisers.
The job of fashion merchandiser involves multiple areas of work. They study market trends, buy raw material; get the work done by designers and production team. Fashion merchandisers also analyze the fabric demand of the buyers. Weaving of the fabric is done on the basis of advance orders of the fashion merchandisers. They take the specifications of the garment from the buyer, explain them to the fashion designers and then to the production team and then get the sample ready. Merchandisers give buyers the samples of their garments to take their approval. Sometimes modifications of samples are done according to the requirements of the buyers. After that the final order by the buyer is confirmed.
The fashion merchandisers coordinate with buyers as well as with production team. They help in deciding colors, designs and fabrics. They purchase material from the market and check the quality of the product. They suggest how the cloth should be cut to minimize wastage and production cost. They monitor the whole production process with the help of team. Price of the product is negotiated with the buyer. Then finally they dispatch the garments to the buyers.
There are visual merchandisers who are engaged as managers for shop floors or window decorations. Their job includes management of shop and decoration of display window. This is also one of the impressive ways of marketing strategy. The training is given to the visual merchandisers to make the window display very impressionable to attract the customers. Shopping Malls, big stores, exhibitions, emporiums and fairs are the places where windows and floor displays are very popular.
Fashion trends are changing constantly. Therefore fashion merchandiser should be aware of latest fashion. He should have good knowledge of sales data and objectives of production house. As he is to work with a team he should have leadership and organizational skills. Team spirit is also very important. His work demands traveling and meeting people for sale and purchase. Therefore he should have good communication skills. They should have interest in fashion and sharp observation.
The fashion merchandisers who are attached with big fashion houses have to travel abroad to be aware of latest fashion trends and technologies or to make their place in international markets.
Fashion merchandisers work in garment manufacturing firms and export garment industries. Merchandisers further specialize as production managers, quality controller, fashion retailers and export managers.
Fashion merchandisers require specialized skills to earn a good amount of money. They can get training to be professionals. Graduation is the minimum qualification for merchandising, marketing and manufacturing. Specialization in production management is a post graduate diploma.
