of men, women and children. Designers create garments and accessories
making them functional as well as attractive, the main consideration
being the need of the client, which obviously are influenced by trends,
market prediction and the climate. The designer needs to keep the
close track with fit, style, colour, texture, size and material. Fashion
designers design outer and inner garments and accessories to go with
it.
DESIGN DEPARTMENT: The design department
in a manufacturing unit have Designers, Cutting Assistants, Sketching
Assistants, Junior Designers.
MARKETING AND MERCHANDISING: The
trends in fashion are always changing. The merchandising and marketing
people in this industry have a thorough knowledge of trends, market
demand and company’s vision and objectives.
MANUFACTURING DEPARTMENT: The manufacturing
department is headed by Production Manager. He schedules the work
plans, training and retraining of workers, maintain the quality standards.
FASHION COORDINATORS: The job of Fashion
Coordinators is to coordinate with the buyer and production manager.
They also plan the specifications for fabrics, colours, designs and
keep an eye on the quality.
The fashion industry is one of the largest industries in India. It ranks among the high growth sector of the economy. A large number of people are absorbed in the fashion industry.
The garment industry is the major part of fashion industry. It provides people with lots of opportunities. The fashion industry is fast growing industry. The trend of fashion consciousness is bound to grow. Status of the people is identified through their fashion. India enjoys a prominent place in the international market. Indian designers with their creative and rich skill made it possible.
The fashion designer design the attire by keeping in mind so many things like demand of the consumer, cost of the design, texture of the fabric, colors in fashion, international fashion trends, seasons and social customs etc. fashion designers spent much of their time in exploration and research. As they are to design the fabric therefore knowledge about fabric, weave draping qualities, material color, design and changing trend is important.
The process of designing starts with the sketching of original idea on paper and then shaping the pattern pieces which make the garment. Then on the paper pieces of actual size are drawn and cut on a rough material. These pieces are stitched to give the actual shape and fitted on a dummy. Modifications in the design and alterations in the stitching are done in order to give the final shape to the garment. This becomes the sample for making fine fabric garment.
The three main areas for fashion designers and manufacturers are:
- Designing for mass production (wholesale)
- Designing of exclusive pieces for fashion trends.
- Large-scale manufacturers for designer wear.
The largest area out of these three is wholesale manufacturer. The fashion designer of this area simplifies the high fashion designs of the fashion trend by reducing their cost. Thus they produce it on large scale by cutting down its production cost also. Taking trendy dress on low price also satisfies consumer.
Fashion designers who work freelance and create exclusive designs market their product through fashion shows of ‘Haute Couture’ collections. Here I would like to mention some of the names that have earned good name and fame in fashion industry.

Wholesale manufacturing sector, generally specialize in producing certain types of clothes in a wide range of styles and fabrics. Further they can specialize in designing of men’s wear, women’ wear, children wear etc. there are fashion designers who have restricted themselves in one or two areas. For example: designing of men’ suits, jackets and jeans etc.

The love of labels is fast catching up with fashion enthusiasts in 2nd class cities also. International designers have also got space in Indian malls. They are giving challenge to Indian designers. Therefore the job of Indian fashion designer has become more competitive and stressful. The success of a designer depends on the inherent creativity and formal training. Fashion designer should be artistic and should be able to express their ideas through sketches. He should have knowledge of colors, shades and tones of combining them. Fashion designer should be fashion conscious and aware of market demands.
Employment avenues for fashion designers are enormous. They can work with the various sectors dealing with fashion. They can join the following sectors:
- Export houses dealing with garments/textile/handloom exports.
- Retail and wholesale garment businesses in men’s wear/women’s wear and children’s wear.
- Government/semi government-handloom/textile manufacturers.
- Fashion shows organizers/fashion publishers.
- TV/Film fashion programme producers/comperes/costume designer, etc.
