Travel Agency deals with ordinary tourists, and business travelers, while some Travel Agencies specialize in commercial and business travelers only. Some Travel Agencies also serve as general service agents for foreign travel companies in different countries. The main function of a Travel Agency is to act as an agent, to sell travel products and services on behalf of a supplier, i.e. Airlines, Hotels and Trave Companies. Unlike other retail businesses, a Travel Agency need not keep a stock in hand. A package holiday or a ticket is purchased from a supplier when a customer requests that purchase. The holiday or ticket is supplied to them on commision. The profit is therefore the commision which is the difference between the advertised price which the customer pays and the discounted price at which it is supplied to the agent. Generaly a Travel Agent would consider a 10-12% commission as a good arrangement. All over the world, most of the airlines have stopped giving commission to Travel Agencies in order to make up for growing cost in security. So, Travel Agencies charge now a standard flat fee, per sale. However, some companies still give them a set percentage for selling their product. Major tour companies afford to do this type of business activity as if they were to sell a thousand trips at a cheaper rate they still come out better than if they sell a hundred trips at a higher rate. This process is a win win situation for everyone. Airlines Websites | Aviation Glossary | Flight Attendant Career |
